Valli Geiger, a Democratic state representative from Rockland, Maine, has emerged as a potential candidate for the U.S. Senate after saying that embattled Democratic nominee Graham Platner encouraged her to consider replacing him on the ballot if he steps aside. Platner has not formally withdrawn from the race, and other contenders remain under consideration.
Geiger, a former nurse and mayor, told local outlet WMTW that Platner called her Monday night, praising her as a "fighter" and asking if he could put her name forward. Platner’s campaign confirmed he has not made an endorsement decision but acknowledged encouraging Geiger to consider running if he withdrew.
In response to allegations of rape made against Platner by Jenny Racicot, Geiger posted on Facebook that she would not "throw Graham under the bus" and would not "slander or accuse" Racicot of anything beyond telling her truth. Geiger described Racicot’s story as "seems credible," but added, "none of us knows the truth nor will we ever."
Geiger also praised Platner’s "passion for economic populism" and said she had granted him "an enormous amount of grace" for his behavior during what she described as his "dark years" following multiple military deployments. She expressed hope that Platner would lead the political movement his campaign had built.
Geiger represents a coastal House district including Rockland, Criehaven Township, Matinicus Isle Plantation, the Muscle Ridge Islands, North Haven, and part of Owls Head. Her potential Senate candidacy adds a new dimension to the Maine Senate race as the Democratic Party navigates the controversy surrounding Platner.
