Several Democrats in Maine are being considered as potential replacements for Graham Platner on the 2026 U.S. Senate ballot amid expectations that Platner may withdraw following an ex-girlfriend's allegation of rape.
Under Maine law, if Platner formally withdraws by 5 p.m. on July 13, the Maine Democratic Party can select a new nominee through its party process, with the replacement required to be chosen by July 27.
Troy Jackson, former state Senate President and recent gubernatorial candidate, has filed paperwork to explore a Senate run. Other Democrats, including Paige, who has filed as a Senate candidate, are also being discussed. Paige noted she is proactively keeping options open for supporters who desire a female nominee.
Platner's campaign, according to the New York Post, is deliberating about potentially dropping out but any replacement would need to align with Platner's political platform. Platner himself acknowledged receiving hundreds of encouraging messages as he signaled his possible withdrawal.
Maine Democratic Party Executive Director Devon Murphy-Anderson stated, "As you know, the Maine Democratic Party has been working around the [clock] and we are committed to ensuring that Democrats across [Maine] [have a voice in the process]."
The incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins remains the likely opponent in the general election. Other notable Democrats, such as Governor Mills, suspended her Senate campaign earlier this year citing fundraising challenges.
