KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan — Taiwan’s top shipbuilder, CSBC, is positioning itself to support the government’s efforts to strengthen maritime defense capabilities in response to increasing Chinese naval activity near its waters. The company’s chairman told Nikkei Asia that CSBC is emerging from challenging times and is ready to back Taiwan’s ambitious plans to expand its naval forces to counter vessels from China that are “constantly lurking around.”

Among CSBC’s recent developments is the CSBC Endeavor Manta, introduced last year as one of Taiwan’s first military uncrewed surface vessels. This vessel is designed for a variety of missions, including rescues, patrols, combat operations, and attacks.

The chairman also mentioned that Taiwan’s first homegrown submarine is nearing readiness and called on the legislature to support the deployment of drones as part of the defense strategy.

These moves come amid heightened regional tensions as Taiwan seeks to bolster its maritime security against China’s increasing presence.
