Egypt has formally requested FIFA to investigate the refereeing during its Round of 16 match against Argentina at the FIFA World Cup. The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) expressed strong dissatisfaction with the officiating, particularly targeting French referee Francois Letexier, who officiated the match.

Egypt led 2-0 late in the second half before Argentina scored three goals in a 13-minute span to win 3-2 and advance to the quarterfinals. Egypt also had a goal disallowed in the 58th minute after a VAR review identified a foul by an Egyptian player against an Argentine player shortly before the goal.

Following the match, Egypt's coach Hossam Hassan outlined several complaints regarding the refereeing decisions and the use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system. The EFA followed up with two statements emphasizing their concerns. In the second statement, EFA president Hany Abou Rida filed a formal complaint with FIFA demanding an investigation into Letexier and the refereeing team, citing "serious refereeing mistakes" and "double standards" that contributed to Egypt's loss and exit from the tournament. The complaint also called for the exclusion of the referee and his crew from the remainder of the World Cup pending investigation.

The EFA stated, "The Egyptian Football Association cannot remain silent regarding the refereeing decisions witnessed during the match against Argentina as well as the failure to make appropriate use of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system."

Argentina is set to face Switzerland in the World Cup quarterfinals on Sunday morning (AEST).
