There was a moment when the Democratic Party had the chance to position itself as the rational alternative amid a Republican shift toward nationalist populism centered on Donald Trump. However, according to a recent analysis by J.D. Tuccille for Reason, Democrats instead embraced socialism, antisemitism, and hostility to Western civilization, passing over the opportunity to be seen as the "sane party."
This shift is exemplified by the party's support for Graham Platner, who, despite dropping out, remains a controversial figure due to his Nazi tattoo, self-described communism, attacks on Jews and Israel, and abusive behavior towards women. Platner's posturing as a working-class hero has been widely criticized.
Jonathan Chait, writing for The Atlantic, noted that in 2025, the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) convention removed language that allowed expulsion of members working for communist cells and added a provision recognizing the Palestinian "right to resistance" as central to the organization. Chait described the DSA as being run by far-left factions that have "realigned the organization in firm opposition to liberal democracy."
Further illustrating the ideological extremity, figures associated with these movements have made provocative statements, such as wiping hands on the American flag and calling for the "total eradication of Western civilization." Gallup polling also indicates that Democrats are not particularly proud to be American.
Tuccille points out that this development is unfortunate, especially as the Republican Party remains deeply influenced by populism, nationalism, and Trump idolatry, leaving the political landscape polarized without a clear moderate refuge.
