Maine's Democratic Senate candidate, Graham Platner, has officially dropped out of the race, giving the Democratic Party until July 27 to find a replacement. Platner's withdrawal comes after his poll numbers plummeted following revelations of a serious sexual assault allegation.

Platner, described as a deeply flawed candidate, faced scrutiny over a history of controversial behavior, including a Nazi tattoo, provocative Reddit posts, alcoholism, and mistreatment of past girlfriends. Although he claimed ignorance about the tattoo when he got it, these issues collectively raised significant concerns.

Beyond personal controversies, Platner ran on a far-left platform that some viewed as having dubious electoral viability. Democratic primary voters have shown a tendency to select socialist and quasi-communist figures, likely reflecting dissatisfaction with the party establishment.

When allegations of violence toward women first surfaced, Platner claimed the accusations were part of a concerted effort by the "Epstein class" to remove him from the race. Additionally, some Democratic consultants, including Morris Katz and Rebecca Katz, were criticized for promoting a policy agenda focused on opposing billionaires, which some argue does not effectively appeal to working-class voters.

A different Democratic candidate is expected to have a stronger chance of defeating the incumbent Republican senator.
