The family of Cameron Hughes, a 39-year-old Perth man who died in a Bali immigration detention centre, has expressed deep grief and raised numerous questions about the circumstances surrounding his death.
Hughes had lived in Bali for more than 15 years, running a car restoration business in Jimbaran, South Kuta. He was married and had an eight-year-old son. Recently separated from his Indonesian wife, Hughes was reportedly navigating Indonesia's immigration system to extend his visa and remain close to his son.
Officials from Bali immigration stated that Hughes was taken into immigration detention on Friday, July 11th, 2026, for an alleged breach of his visa conditions. A spokesperson from Bali immigration's Ngurah Rai office said, "During subsequent periodic monitoring via CCTV, officers noticed an anomaly when the detainee remained motionless for an extended period inside the rest room."
Medical personnel provided initial treatment and transferred Hughes to Bali Jimbaran General Hospital for intensive care. However, officials said he was declared dead en route to the hospital, with a preliminary medical assessment indicating cardiac arrest as the cause of death.
Hughes's family denied suggestions that he had failed to cooperate with immigration authorities, stating they had been in regular contact with officials to clarify his status. In a statement, they described Cameron as "a beautiful person who loved his family deeply and was a devoted father."
Authorities have extended condolences to the family and indicated they will work closely with consular staff to fully understand the situation.
