Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island released a whistleblower complaint on Saturday, July 11th, 2026, accusing allies of President Donald Trump of mismanaging renovations at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The complaint alleges that the renovations were rushed to satisfy Trump’s "aesthetic whims" and his desire to feature in televised events in December.
According to Whitehouse, the Kennedy Center under Trump bypassed standard procedures for awarding government contracts and approved unnecessary or faulty projects. The whistleblower report indicates that officials worked in "unusually close consultation" with Trump’s White House to prepare the Center for these events.
Shortly after his 2025 inauguration, Trump reportedly fired most of the Kennedy Center’s board and replaced them with allies. Whitehouse also cited an incident where the Trump-appointed leadership removed newly installed bathroom tiles because the president "didn’t like the color."
The complaint draws parallels to Trump’s ongoing issues with the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which has faced criticism for algae bloom and peeling paint following a Trump-approved renovation.
These allegations come amid ongoing legal proceedings, with a U.S. court ruling that Trump’s name must remain off the Kennedy Center during an appeal.
