Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island released a whistleblower complaint on Saturday, July 11th, 2026, accusing allies of President Donald Trump of mismanaging renovations at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The complaint alleges that the renovations were rushed to accommodate Trump's "aesthetic whims" and his desire to feature in televised events in December.

According to Whitehouse's letter to the Kennedy Center's leadership, the Center bypassed standard procedures for awarding government contracts and approved unnecessary or faulty projects. The whistleblower report indicates that officials worked "in unusually close consultation" with Trump's White House to prepare the Center for these events.

Shortly after his 2025 inauguration, Trump reportedly dismissed most of the Kennedy Center's board and replaced them with his allies. Whitehouse also cited an incident where the Trump-appointed leadership removed newly installed bathroom tiles simply because the president "didn't like the color."

The complaint draws parallels to Trump's ongoing issues with the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which has faced criticism for algae blooms and peeling paint following a Trump-approved renovation.

Additionally, a US court has ruled that Trump's name must remain off the Kennedy Center during an ongoing appeal.
