Israel's parliament announced on Sunday, July 12, 2026, that national elections will be held on October 27, the last date permitted by law. This election is widely viewed as a referendum on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's leadership since the Gaza war erupted.
The current Knesset is scheduled to end its term on July 17, allowing the ruling coalition to complete a full four-year term for the first time in decades. Parliament stated, "Since the current Knesset is expected to serve its full term and the next general election is already set by law for October 27, with no intention of shortening the legislature's tenure, there is no need to enact a Knesset Dissolution Law in the usual sense."
Netanyahu, 76, Israel's longest-serving prime minister with multiple non-consecutive terms, has declared his intention to seek re-election and "win" another term. He described the upcoming election as potentially the defining contest of his political life.
In recent weeks, Netanyahu's government, noted as one of the most right-wing coalitions in Israel's history, has accelerated efforts to pass legislation aimed at strengthening his alliance ahead of the vote. Last month, he expressed a goal to "establish a broad national government, not a right-wing, not a left-wing government that depends on Arab parties, but a broad national government."
A poll conducted by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem revealed that over 92 percent of Israelis believe Iran had won the Middle East war, and support for Netanyahu's premiership dropped from 40.5 percent in early March to 29.4 percent in June.
Netanyahu's key allies have threatened to topple the current government unless their constituents are exempted from military draft requirements, while the Israeli military and much of the public argue for broad enlistment due to stretched armed forces after years of conflict.
Netanyahu stated, "After we have removed the Iranian existential threat, the broad national government can make peace within ourselves, deal with the remnants of the Iranian axis and reap the fruits of our victory in political agreements like the one we are making with Lebanon -- and there are a few more on the way."
