United States Senator Mitch McConnell, the 84-year-old Republican from Kentucky, has issued a health update after a prolonged absence from Congress due to hospitalization. McConnell revealed that a fall led to his hospitalization and that he was "briefly unconscious" around the time he was first admitted to the hospital.

In a statement released on Sunday, July 12, 2026, McConnell said, "I don’t have any tumors or hemorrhages," and added that he is now "regaining my strength." He also remarked, "Even in the public eye, I feel that same instinct — I can’t help it."

McConnell was first elected to the Senate in 1984 and served as the Republican leader from 2007 until last year, holding both majority and minority leader positions. He was previously hospitalized with a concussion in March 2023 after a fall in a Washington, DC hotel, which caused him to miss several weeks of work.

His recent prolonged hospitalization had raised questions within his party about his condition. Meanwhile, the US Senate has been active on issues including the approval of an Iran war powers resolution and ongoing US strikes in Iran, which have sparked debate over war powers.
