Payne Haas, the Brisbane prop known for his powerful front-row play, has confirmed he will represent Samoa in the 2026 Rugby League World Cup. Despite speculation that he might switch back to Australia for the tournament, the 26-year-old has firmly quashed these reports.
Haas, who has Samoan heritage through his mother Joan Haas, committed to Toa Samoa during last year's Pacific Championships after previously playing four Tests with Australia. He played a key role in helping Samoa reach the Pacific Cup final, notably starring in a 34-6 victory over Tonga.
"I made my decision last year to move to Samoa from Australia," Haas said. "The kind of person I am, I wouldn't backflip on them. I want to represent my mum, my grandmother and my grandad as well, and there is no way in hell that I would (backflip)."
Samoa has been drawn in a pool with France, Papua New Guinea, and Tonga for the 10-team tournament, which will be hosted by Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea in October and November 2026. Haas expressed optimism about Samoa's chances, stating, "With the kind of calibre of players we have got, there is a great chance, but that is still far away."
Recently, Haas dominated the State of Origin decider for New South Wales, helping secure a 30-12 win over Queensland. He also mentioned focusing on his current club, the Brisbane Broncos, as he prepares for the final months of his season.
