With less than three months until Brazil’s presidential election on October 2026, China is closely monitoring a critical political contest between incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and his challenger, Senator Flavio Bolsonaro.

Lula, who is seeking a fourth non-consecutive term, maintains strong ties with Beijing. His opponent, Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, was confirmed on Saturday, July 26th, 2026, as the Liberal Party’s candidate. Jair Bolsonaro was jailed last year for attempting a military coup and sentenced to more than 27 years in prison but is currently under house arrest due to health issues.

Analysts warn that a victory for Flavio Bolsonaro could lead to an “automatic alignment” with Washington, although pragmatic commercial relations with Beijing are expected to continue.

The election comes shortly after the US Trade Representative’s office imposed an additional 12.5% tariff under Section 301 on major trading partners, including China and Brazil. In response, Chinese President Xi Jinping told Lula that Beijing is ready to support Brazil in “safeguarding its own sovereignty and independence, and opposing foreign interference.”

This high-stakes duel highlights the broader geopolitical tensions involving China, the United States, and Brazil’s strategic positioning.
