On Monday, July 27th, 2026, Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi declared that a deadly Ukrainian attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea "cannot go unanswered," describing the incident as a violation of the United Nations Charter. Araghchi accused Israel on social media of provoking the attack to "drag Europe into its war."

Araghchi made these remarks during calls with European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. In a statement posted on the Russian Foreign Ministry’s website, Araghchi expressed gratitude to local authorities in Russia’s Astrakhan region, where the vessel had started its journey, for assisting the crew. He also emphasized the need to "put an end to such adventures by the Kyiv regime."

Additionally, Ebrahim Azizi, head of Iran’s parliament National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, warned on social media that "any attack on Iran always comes with a cost," noting that the US and Israel are aware of this.

On the same day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed on social media that Ukraine had achieved "very strong results" with long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea, targeting "vessels used in military cargo shipments involving Iran, as well as a warship."

This incident raises concerns about the widening scope of conflict involving Iran beyond the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea, now extending to the Caspian Sea.
