Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) on Monday, July 28th, 2026, condemned the Pentagon’s revision of the death toll for U.S. service members killed by Iran, calling it “an act of cruelty.” Warren criticized the move during an appearance on MS Now’s “All In with Chris Hayes,” stating, “It just is an act of cruelty. Think what that means for those families. But it is also the move of every autocrat in history, is to try to control reality, to control history, to control the line of what’s told.”

The Iran conflict has resulted in 18 U.S. service member deaths and 427 injuries. However, the Pentagon recently reclassified four deaths as “Overseas Operations” on the Defense Casualty Analysis System website, a decision that has raised concerns among lawmakers. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell defended the decision, explaining that military injuries range from minor sprains during routine training to incidents unrelated to combat operations, justifying the masking of injuries, deaths, and strikes.

Rep. Thomas Massie (Ky.) criticized the change in casualty reporting, stating, “The reality: By going more than 90 days without congressional authorization, Secretary Hegseth IS BREAKING THE LAW and must be held accountable.” Meanwhile, Rep. Joe Courtney (Conn.) emphasized that the American people “deserve answers” regarding the war’s impact, noting that administration officials estimate the war’s cost at $37.5 billion.

Warren has also strongly condemned the military conflict with Iran, describing it as illegal, reckless, and unplanned. Lawmakers continue to raise concerns about the Pentagon’s decision not to report three strikes on American bases in the Middle East and the concealment of dozens of injuries alongside deaths.
