Argentina’s performance in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final was overshadowed by disciplinary charges brought by FIFA on Wednesday, July 30th, 2026. The charges include “discriminatory chants and gestures” by fans, an alleged assault by an assistant coach, and “throwing of objects by spectators” during several matches at the tournament.

FIFA condemned racism during the event after an Argentinian supporter directed a Black US influencer, known as IShowSpeed, to “cry at the zoo” during a livestream. IShowSpeed later performed at the World Cup final.

Hollywood actor Samuel L Jackson also spoke out, urging Black people on Instagram not to support Argentina, which he described as one of “the most racist countries in the world.”

Al Jazeera Sport noted that these charges could have significant implications for the Argentina team, which had celebrated their victory at the Qatar 2022 World Cup but left much to be desired in their 2026 final appearance, where Spain won 1-0 after extra time despite Argentina’s limited offensive opportunities.
