Billionaire mining magnate Gina Rinehart wrote to Queensland's deputy premier, Jarrod Bleijie, advocating for Olympic rowing and canoeing events to be held in Rockhampton ahead of the release of the LNP's Games Delivery Plan in March 2025.

In her letter, Rinehart emphasized her long-term support for Australian rowing, noting that the Australian team often trains on the Fitzroy River and that Rockhampton annually hosts the Queensland state school championships. She described the rowing facility as "world-class" and close to major infrastructure, suggesting it could save taxpayer money.

The Queensland government has consistently dismissed criticism regarding the suitability of the croc-infested Fitzroy River for hosting the 2032 Games events. Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie stated the government "listened to the chorus of regional communities" who felt overlooked by previous administrations, ensuring the 2032 Games would benefit all Queenslanders, including those in Rockhampton and other regional centers.

A spokesperson for Rinehart highlighted her role as Patron of Rowing Australia and her extensive involvement in the sport, asserting it was unsurprising she would offer insight alongside other sporting representatives. The spokesperson also denied any suggestion that Rinehart's lobbying was motivated by ulterior motives or personal gain.

However, some have questioned the nature of Rinehart's influence, with one critic stating, "I think this raises a lot of questions for the deputy premier and what Gina Rinehart got in return for getting her way."
