Joanna Ruth Shields, 37, was found dead near Sykes Hot Springs in California’s Ventana Wilderness on July 30, 2026. Initial reports from the Monterey County Sheriff's Office suggested possible foul play. However, the official coroner's report determined her cause of death as probable alcohol withdrawal seizures linked to chronic alcohol use disorder.

Friends hiking with Shields reported she had gone to the river that morning, and shortly after, one of them found her unresponsive in the water. Andres Rosas, commander and primary public information officer for the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, told KSBW 8, "This is a probable seizure that occurred as a result of chronic alcohol use disorder, but there was nothing that stood out that indicated any type of criminal activity."

Experts explain that heavy, prolonged alcohol consumption causes the brain to adjust its chemical signals to maintain bodily functions. Withdrawal symptoms typically begin within six to 24 hours after the last drink, with seizure risk peaking between 24 and 48 hours. Such seizures can turn wilderness settings into life-threatening traps for heavy drinkers.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) offers a National Helpline providing free, confidential treatment referrals 24/7 at 1-800-662-4357.

Given the investigation and forensic findings, no further inquiry into Shields' death is underway.
