Senate Republicans remain determined to confirm Todd Blanche as attorney general in the coming weeks, despite President Donald Trump’s threat to withdraw the nomination and resubmit it in the next Congress.

Key Republican senators John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina have raised concerns that are delaying the confirmation. Cornyn highlighted issues with the current phrasing of a provision that could extend over 100 different subsidies to the Trump Organization in the future, calling it a problem. Tillis expressed worry about Democrats using the $1.776 billion Anti-Weaponization Fund against GOP candidates if it is not officially nullified.

Tillis also noted that Trump’s willingness to halt his own nominee over demands to formally end the fund suggests that some in the White House may want to retain this capability for future use. Despite these hurdles, Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley, an Iowa Republican, supports Blanche’s confirmation.

Blanche is described as a “star” who would continue to lead the Justice Department as acting attorney general if his nomination is temporarily withdrawn. However, there is uncertainty about the November election outcome, which could affect the number of Republicans available to vote on the confirmation next year.

Tillis made his comments on Thursday afternoon, hours after President Trump’s public statement on the matter.
