A recent CNN poll conducted by market research firm SSRS shows that former President Donald Trump’s overall approval rating has dropped to 34%, matching his previous lowest level recorded after the January 6, 2021 insurrection. This decline comes amid growing concerns over Trump’s attention to the nation’s pressing problems and his leadership effectiveness.

According to the poll, three-quarters of Americans believe Trump is not focusing enough on the country’s most important issues, while two-thirds think he places his own interests above those of the United States. Only 38% of respondents consider him an effective world leader, and 57% question his stamina and sharpness to serve effectively at age 80.

The survey highlights public disapproval of Trump’s handling of the ongoing war in Iran, with just 28% approving of his actions and only 25% believing the conflict has been worth the cost in American lives. Rising gas prices have also caused hardship for 74% of Americans, up from 63% in March.

Trump’s hardline immigration policies, once a strong point for his approval, now receive mixed reviews: only 39% think he is doing a good job, while 54% believe he has gone too far with mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.

Additionally, Trump’s pursuit of a taxpayer-funded White House ballroom, the flawed renovation of the Washington DC reflecting pool, and plans for a ceremonial arch have garnered positive reactions from only 17% of those surveyed.

The poll comes less than 100 days before the November 2026 midterm elections, where the Republican party, led by Trump, is widely expected to lose control of one or both chambers of Congress.
