Peru’s newly inaugurated president, Keiko Fujimori, has announced plans to intensify the country’s relationship with the United States, which her government regards as a “strategic partner.” According to Peru’s newly appointed Foreign Minister Carlos Espa, the government will join the Trump administration’s Shield of the Americas coalition.

In addition to strengthening ties with the US, Peru intends to restore diplomatic relations with Mexico and Colombia and initiate efforts to rebuild connections with Venezuela.

Fujimori narrowly defeated her left-wing rival Roberto Sanchez by fewer than 50,000 votes in the June 2026 run-off election after three previous unsuccessful presidential bids. Her inauguration was met with protests in Lima.

Her father, former President Alberto Fujimori, was arrested in 2005 after his presidency but was controversially pardoned and released from prison in late 2023, shortly before his death in 2024.

Recent events in Peru also include a tragic accident where at least 14 people died after a minibus rolled off a mountain road.
