Pressure is mounting on FIFA and its president, Gianni Infantino, following proposals to introduce private investment into the FIFA World Cups and other events.

Carlos Cordeiro, senior adviser to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, resigned on Friday, July 31, 2026, citing his opposition to the plan to sell stakes in FIFA's World Cup events through a newly formed venture called FIFA Forward Enterprise. He described the proposal as "a bad deal for football."

In a statement, Cordeiro said, "Let me be clear: I had no involvement in this proposal and I oppose it unequivocally. It is a bad deal for FIFA’s Member Associations, a bad deal for football and a bad deal for the long-term future of the game."

Cordeiro had previously represented FIFA on the White House Task Force for the 2026 World Cup, which is hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The controversy arises amid broader scrutiny of FIFA's governance and its plans to monetize World Cup events through private investment, a move that has drawn criticism from within the organization.

Separately, FIFA has charged Argentina with unspecified violations, with potential punishments under consideration.
