China is advancing its power grid reliability by integrating quantum technologies after a successful 18-month trial at a substation in Hefei, Anhui province. The trial utilized quantum technology to rapidly detect and diagnose equipment defects and faults within the power system, according to a report published on August 1, 2026, by the party mouthpiece People’s Daily.

Officially commissioned in November 2024, the pioneering facility developed and applied dozens of quantum solutions across three key domains: measurement, communication, and computing. Quantum technology leverages the physics of individual atoms existing in multiple states simultaneously, known as “superposition,” enabling enhanced precision, speed, and security in data measurement, computation, and communication.

Tian Teng, a researcher with Anhui Electric Power Company, emphasized the practical impact of the technology, stating that it serves as a "hard support" for ensuring power supply and fostering development rather than being merely a "showpiece."

The project marks a landmark integration of a new-type power grid with cutting-edge quantum technology, representing the first systematic application of quantum tech to power grid engineering in China. Plans are underway to expand these quantum applications—including precision sensors and computer simulations—across the national power grid to help prevent blackouts.
