Russian missile strikes on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv killed at least nine people and wounded 28 others, including four children, according to Ukraine's state emergency service on Saturday, August 1, 2026. The attacks damaged homes and caused fires across five regions of the city.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to "Stay in shelters!" via Telegram amid the barrage. AFP journalists reported hearing more than 10 explosions in quick succession, triggering car alarms throughout the city. One local described the destruction, saying, "Everything was smashed, the windows, everything," and added, "You can't stay here after something like this."

The emergency service also reported that 105 people had been rescued from affected areas by Friday morning. Meanwhile, Russia's Ministry of Defence claimed its air defence systems intercepted and destroyed 274 Ukrainian drones overnight.

The attacks come as both Russia and Ukraine have intensified their military actions in recent months. Moscow has increased long-range strikes on towns and cities across Ukraine, prompting Kiev to seek additional air defence support from its allies. The United Nations reported that June was the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine since April 2022.

This latest escalation underscores the continuing humanitarian toll and the volatile security situation in the region.
