A two-year-old pitbull named Roo, who recently ran away from home after being spooked, was rescued after spending two days trapped in a dim railway tunnel in San Francisco. Caltrain operators first spotted Roo on his initial day in the tunnel but, seeing him unmoving, assumed he had been fatally struck by a train, according to a social media post from the San Francisco animal care and control shelter.
On the following day, police officers entered the tunnel with flashlights and found Roo curled up next to a rail track. They led him out of the darkness into daylight. The shelter noted, “He was terrified at first, then was thrilled to be rescued.”
In a related incident, Menlo Park firefighters rescued another missing dog found swimming in the San Francisco Bay, with seagulls following in pursuit.
These rescues highlight recent efforts in the San Francisco area to aid dogs in distress.
