Data from the General Social Survey, conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago, reveals that married Americans report a wide range of sexual frequency. The survey, which asked couples how often they had sex during the past 12 months, found the average American adult engages in sexual activity about 53 times a year, or slightly more than once per week, according to research by the telehealth platform Hims.

National demographic studies indicate that lower sexual frequency is often a normal aspect of aging and long-term relationships. Researchers suggest there may be a "sweet spot" for marital satisfaction around once a week, with no additional happiness benefits from more frequent intimacy.

Roughly 17% of adults aged 70 and older report engaging in sexual activity on a weekly basis, based on data from AARP.

Experts are uncertain why certain differences in sexual frequency exist or why what was once considered an advantage may now be a disadvantage, though some speculate it relates to the increasing age at which most people marry.

There is no "perfect statistic" or ideal amount of sex; preferences vary, and "you like what you like, and that’s perfectly OK," the report notes.

Separately, Marc Siegel highlighted the U.S. fertility rate has declined to a record low of 1.56 children per couple, raising concerns about population size. He also discussed a surge in seasonal allergies linked to recent weather patterns, emphasizing the "hygiene hypothesis" in immune system development.
