Sweden has enacted a new law that doubles the maximum prison sentences for gang-related crimes, aiming to curb the country’s ongoing struggle with organised criminal networks. The legislation, effective from Saturday, August 1st, 2026, permits courts to impose sentences up to twice as long as previously allowed for certain offences.

For instance, a gang member caught carrying a firearm, who previously faced a maximum of four years in prison, can now be sentenced to up to eight years, according to Swedish news agency TT. The tougher sentencing rules also extend to juvenile offenders, although the law maintains provisions for reduced sentences for minors.

This move comes amid increasing gang violence in Sweden, where criminal groups have been recruiting teenagers to carry out contract killings. The country recently experienced its worst mass shooting, with about 10 people killed at a school for adults.

The new penalties reflect Sweden’s intensified efforts to combat organised crime and improve public safety.
