A truck bomb exploded early on Saturday, August 1, 2026, outside a police base in Cucuta, Colombia, injuring 11 officers and killing a police dog. The blast damaged much of the building’s roofing and shattered its windows.
General William Rincon, director of Colombia’s police, stated the explosion originated from a truck left outside the police headquarters in Norte de Santander Province. He described the incident as a "vile terrorist attack" and vowed to pursue those responsible.
Colombian Defence Minister Pedro Sanchez publicly blamed the National Liberation Army (ELN), the country’s largest remaining rebel group, for the attack. He also announced a US$60,000 reward for information leading to the perpetrators. The ELN has been engaged in conflict with the Colombian government for decades and is estimated to have around 6,000 fighters operating in Colombia and neighboring Venezuela.
The attack occurred in Cucuta, a city on Colombia’s border with Venezuela, an area long contested by drug gangs and rebel groups for control over smuggling routes.
This incident comes just days before the inauguration of Abelardo de la Espriella, an ultraconservative president-elect who has pledged to cancel peace talks with the nation’s remaining rebel groups. De la Espriella is scheduled to be sworn in next Friday in Cali, another Colombian city recently affected by rebel attacks.
