WNBA star Brittney Griner has filed for divorce from her wife, Cherelle Griner, ending their eight-year marriage. The filing took place on Thursday, August 1, 2026, in Georgia’s Fulton County, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The couple, who have been married since 2018, share a 2-year-old son.
Court documents indicate the date of separation as July 24, 2026, with Brittney Griner stating their marriage was “irretrievably broken.”
Brittney Griner, a former Atlanta Dream player and WNBA All-Star, was arrested in February 2022 in Russia after authorities discovered vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage. She was charged with smuggling “narcotic drugs” into Russia and sentenced to nine years in a Russian penal colony.
During her imprisonment, Cherelle Griner, an attorney, actively advocated for her release. Brittney Griner was freed in December 2022 as part of a U.S.-Russia prisoner swap.
