Brian Romero, the Democratic nominee for New York's 34th Assembly District, removed a GoFundMe campaign on Friday, August 1st, 2026, after inquiries from the New York Post about the fundraiser seeking $2,000 to cover rent and groceries.

Romero, a Democratic Socialist expected to easily win the heavily Democratic district, is set to earn the state Assembly's $142,000 annual salary once sworn in, along with legislative per diem payments during sessions. The appeal drew criticism given his anticipated income and the reported $2,600 monthly rent for the Jackson Heights apartment he shares with his partner.

Romero explained that he left his full-time job as a senior adviser to state Senator Kristen Gonzalez earlier this year after receiving ethics guidance upon becoming a candidate. He said he has exhausted his savings while searching for consulting work and has been unable to collect unemployment benefits. Romero also stated he did not keep any of the money donated through the GoFundMe and that friends offered financial help while he sought employment.

He said, "I'm excited that we won and I saved for months to get by but I've now depleted my savings as I'm close to closing down some consulting gigs."

The incident occurred amid a broader political context where Democratic Socialists, including candidates Claire Valdez and Darieliza Avila Chevalier, are campaigning on progressive platforms in New York.
