Hundreds of people gathered at Smiths Park Playground in Clyde North, Melbourne, on Sunday, August 2nd, 2026, to pay tribute to Brooke Stephens, a 29-year-old mother who died after being allegedly attacked by her partner in their home on July 26th.

Stephens' partner, 32-year-old Jorden Turney, has been charged with her murder and is scheduled to face a committal hearing in November.

Family members and friends remembered Stephens as a beautiful and loving mother. Kelly-Ann Faulkner, a family member, said the majority of the family were still in shock. She noted the profound impact on Stephens' two young sons, saying they are "in the worst place you could possibly ever think of" and "won't get to grow up with their mum; they'll go to bed every night wondering where their mum is."

Vigil organiser Em Ross stated the event was held to honour Stephens' memory, emphasizing the collective grief and the community's commitment to safety: "We are here to acknowledge the life she lived, the people who loved her, and the devastating loss being felt by her family, her friends and the wider community. May each candle represent our collective love, our sorrow and our commitment to creating a safer community."

Stephens was also remembered for her love of basketball, which she coached, highlighting her active role in the community.
