President Trump announced late Saturday, August 2, 2026, that he was halting a planned attack against the Islamic Republic of Iran, citing the outline of a deal that had been reached as the reason for the decision. Trump stated on his Truth Social platform that the U.S. was "locked and loaded and ready to go against the Islamic Republic of Iran, at levels of Military Terror, Strength, and Power not seen since World War II."

Despite this readiness, Trump wrote, "we have just been asked by Iran, and other Middle Eastern Countries, to hold off any attack in that the perimeters of a deal has been agreed to." He added that the deal would include the "Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT, and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat."

"Based on this request, I have agreed, for the future benefit of the WORLD and, likewise, the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran, to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL," Trump said.

American officials had indicated on Friday that the U.S. was reportedly planning to restart strikes targeting Iran as soon as the weekend. CBS News reported that Israel was also involved in plans to launch "one of the harshest bombing campaigns to date" targeting Iranian energy infrastructure.

The conflict with Iran recently passed the five-month mark, placing stress on the global economy, contributing to rising oil and gas prices, straining U.S. relationships with historic allies, and proving unpopular with the American public according to recent polling. AAA reported that the average price of a gallon of regular gasoline in the U.S. was about $4.10 as of early Sunday, up from approximately $3.15 the previous year.
