Caitlin Clark, star player for the Indiana Fever, addressed the ongoing debate over transgender athletes competing in women's sports on Sunday, August 3rd, 2026, after her teammate Sophie Cunningham's comments sparked weeks of protest.

Following the Indiana Fever’s 108-100 loss to the Minnesota Lynx, Clark was asked about Cunningham’s stance that biological males should not compete in women’s sports. Cunningham had argued that young girls "shouldn’t have to go against biological men" and emphasized the need to protect female athletes in locker rooms and competition.

Clark declined to take a definitive stance on the issue, stating, "I think it’s for leagues and governing bodies to work with their athletes to find solutions." She also noted that the topic was not discussed within the Fever’s locker room.

Clark did not side with Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve, who wore a "Trans kids belong" shirt during the game, signaling support for transgender youth.

Reflecting on the game, Clark said, "Our focus is on basketball. That’s what we talk about and how we can get wins and obviously we didn’t do that tonight. So, we need to find an area to improve in that way."

The controversy has drawn significant attention, including protests at the Target Center in Minneapolis during the Fever-Lynx game.
