Enio Screpanti, a 67-year-old former prison worker, was found guilty by a unanimous jury verdict on Monday, August 3rd, 2026, of raping and committing aggravated indecent assault against a female inmate at an Adelaide jail. The offences occurred in the early 2020s.

The trial took place over four days in South Australia's District Court. The jury deliberated for just over two hours before delivering the guilty verdicts.

During the trial, the jury heard that Screpanti sexually assaulted the woman on a treadmill in the prison gym before raping her several months later. Convicted murderer and fellow inmate Nicole McGuinness gave evidence regarding uncharged acts to provide context to the charged offences.

Prosecutor Christine Hanna requested the court revoke Screpanti's bail due to the seriousness of the crimes. Although defence barrister Gilbert Aitken opposed this, Judge Anne Barnett ruled it appropriate to remand Screpanti in custody, revoking his bail ahead of a pre-sentence hearing scheduled for next month.

In his closing submissions, Aitken noted there was no CCTV footage of the incident and questioned the victim's evidence, while Hanna emphasized the gravity of the offending in her closing address.
