The Cleveland Guardians experienced a dramatic shift during their game at Progressive Field on Sunday, August 2nd, 2026, as starting pitcher Gavin Williams moved from pitching a perfect game to being involved in a benches-clearing altercation.

Williams was dominant early, striking out 10 of the first 15 hitters he faced and entering the top of the sixth inning with a perfect game bid underway. However, tensions rose when Arizona Diamondbacks center fielder Tim Tawa attempted a bunt on a 0-1 pitch from Williams. Bunting during a perfect game bid is generally frowned upon in baseball's unwritten rules.

Guardians catcher Patrick Bailey confronted Tawa after the bunt attempt, leading to a verbal exchange before Tawa returned to the batter's box. Following a wild pitch by Williams, umpires called a rain delay, and the grounds crew quickly covered the field. During the delay, players from both teams engaged in a benches-clearing scrum, which was eventually diffused by Arizona shortstop Geraldo Perdomo separating Cleveland's third base and infield coach Rouglas Odor.

This was not the first time Williams faced bunt attempts during a perfect game scenario; on July 9th, 2026, against the Minnesota Twins, Royce Lewis also showed bunt while Williams was pitching perfectly.

Williams did not return to the game after the rain delay, finishing with 5.2 innings pitched, 10 strikeouts, one hit, and one walk allowed.
