Hong Kong residents woke to an amber rainstorm warning for the second consecutive morning on Monday, August 3rd, as the city’s forecaster predicted sunnier but very hot weather later in the week.
The Hong Kong Observatory issued the amber rainstorm warning signal at 6:40 a.m., following a similar alert on Sunday morning that lasted more than six hours. Heavy showers had brought over 30mm (1.2 inches) of rainfall to many areas, with some locations on Hong Kong Island receiving up to 50mm.
Authorities warned that the intense rainfall could cause flash flooding in low-lying areas and places with poor drainage. A thunderstorm warning issued on Sunday evening was extended until 10:30 a.m. on Monday.
The Observatory noted that "under the persistent influence of a broad trough of low pressure, showers will still be heavy with squally thunderstorms over the coast of southern China today."
Despite the recent heavy rain, the forecast indicates a sunnier week ahead with temperatures expected to reach as high as 33 degrees Celsius.
