Myanmar's military government announced on Monday, August 3rd, 2026, that detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi met with Arnaud de Baecque, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) representative in the capital, Naypyitaw. This meeting is the first publicly confirmed contact between Suu Kyi and anyone outside the government since the military seized power in February 2021.

Photographs released by the Presidential Press and Information Bureau showed Suu Kyi shaking hands with de Baecque and meeting in a wood-paneled room. Additional images depicted her cutting a pink birthday cake inscribed "Happy Birthday Aunty Suu, 19.6.2026," suggesting the photos may have been taken during a celebration of her 81st birthday in June. Suu Kyi appeared healthy in the photos, although her physical condition could not be independently verified.

Suu Kyi was detained shortly after the military coup that ousted her elected government and was sentenced to 33 years in prison on charges widely considered politically motivated. Her sentence was later reduced, and she was moved to house arrest in April 2026.

Her son, Kim Aris, has led an international campaign demanding proof of life and independent confirmation of her wellbeing. He described the meeting as "a first step, but it must not be the last," expressing hope for further humanitarian progress, including direct family contact and the release of political prisoners.

The ICRC stated that the visit was conducted according to its standards for visiting people deprived of liberty and included a private conversation with Suu Kyi. The timing of the meeting, days before military leader Min Aung Hlaing's trip to Bangkok, was noted by some observers as significant.

Myanmar's military takeover has triggered a civil war that has killed over 100,000 people. Despite repeated assurances from the military about Suu Kyi's health, independent verification has been scarce, making this meeting a rare moment of transparency.
