The White House hosted a meeting on Tuesday, August 3, 2026, with AI industry executives to discuss a new voluntary government review system for the most powerful AI models, an administration official said.

The discussions focus on a regulatory framework outlined in an executive order signed by US President Donald Trump on June 2, 2026. The framework allows companies such as OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic to provide the government access to their most advanced AI models up to 30 days before their planned public release.

This new regime was prompted by concerns over Anthropic's Mythos model, which the AI startup initially withheld from public release due to its potential to expose vulnerabilities in critical computer systems, including those of banks, governments, and hospitals. Mythos was eventually released with usage restrictions.

In June, the Commerce Department ordered Anthropic to suspend all foreign access to its Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models, citing national security concerns linked to a reported jailbreak where users bypassed safety guardrails. Anthropic took both models offline for more than two weeks before gradually restoring access.

The new AI assessment approach marks a significant shift for the Trump administration, which had previously maintained a hands-off stance on AI development to avoid hindering innovation in the competition with China for AI leadership.
