Close to 75% of voters who supported Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election believe that Democrats in Congress should challenge President Trump more aggressively. According to an Economist/YouGov poll released on August 4, 2026, 74% of Harris voter respondents said congressional Democrats challenge Trump “too little,” while only 2% said they challenge him “too much.” Another 18% felt Democrats challenge the president “about the right amount,” and 6% were unsure.

Among all respondents, 40% said Democrats challenge Trump too little, while 32% said they challenge him too much. Fourteen percent said Democrats challenge Trump about the right amount, and another 14% were unsure.

The poll comes amid rising influence of anti-establishment and progressive candidates within the Democratic Party and coincides with declining approval ratings for Trump, who held a 40% approval and 56.6% disapproval rating at the time of the poll. The political environment is also affected by an unpopular war in Iran, economic concerns among Americans, and controversies over immigration policies as the GOP approaches the 2026 midterm elections.

The survey included 1,609 respondents with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.
