Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) stated on Tuesday, August 4th, 2026, that the controversy surrounding Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio) is primarily a matter for the House of Representatives and Ohio voters to decide, as well as a family issue.

Thune refrained from further comment when asked if he agreed with Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio), who has called for Miller to resign from Congress. Moreno's daughter, Emily Moreno, has accused Miller of domestic abuse. The two were married until last year and are currently involved in a contentious custody battle over their young daughter.

Pressed for more details, Thune said, “that’s something that the House of Representatives — it’s a House matter, and obviously, as I said before, it’s a family issue, too, in this case.”

On the same day, the House Ethics Committee announced it had opened a probe into Miller to review allegations of domestic violence, abuse, or illegal drug use. This announcement followed Miller's statement that he would file paperwork for the committee to investigate him, asserting he has “nothing to hide.”
