One of the unexpected moves in the NHL offseason occurred when the Ottawa Senators traded their captain, Brady Tkachuk, to the Florida Panthers. This trade came just weeks after Tkachuk had insisted on his commitment to the Senators.

Senators head coach Travis Green, who took the job partly because of the team's young core including Tkachuk, admitted he was surprised and even a little upset by the trade. Green recalled on the 100% Hockey podcast with Daren Millard and John Shannon that about a month after the season ended, Senators GM Steve Staios updated him on the situation and asked if he was surprised by the trade.

"I can't speak for Brady; I was a little surprised; a little, you know, would I say mad? A little bit," Green said. He also described the situation as "unfortunate," noting that Tkachuk had requested the trade and was going to be moved at some point.

Despite the trade, the Senators have bolstered their lineup by bringing in Andre Burakovsky and William Eklund. The roster now includes key players such as Tim Stützle, Drake Batherson, Shane Pinto, Jake Sanderson, Dylan Cozens, and veteran leadership from Claude Giroux, who signed a one-year deal to return to Ottawa last month.

Green, who previously coached the Vancouver Canucks and New Jersey Devils, emphasized that the young core of the Senators was a significant factor in his decision to coach the team.
