US President Donald Trump has publicly criticized oil companies for "making too much money" amid the global energy market disruption caused by the ongoing US war on Iran. Trump specifically targeted ExxonMobil and Chevron for their substantial windfall profits, urging them to "give some of that back to the public."

For the three months ending in June, ExxonMobil reported a profit of $14.5 billion, doubling its earnings from the same period last year. Chevron posted its highest ever quarterly profit of $12.2 billion, a fivefold increase compared to the previous year.

Meanwhile, BP announced its highest quarterly profits since the first year of Russia's war on Ukraine. However, BP's new chief executive, Meg O’Neill, stated there was "more to do" as the company was "not making the most" of its potential.

In related developments, tariffs imposed last month on 59 countries and the European Union account for 99.4% of US imports, according to involved states.

Separately, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that Edwin Lopez-Cornejo, a 41-year-old immigrant held at a New Jersey ICE detention center, died on August 1st. He is the 22nd person to die in ICE custody this year, according to agency data.
