On Tuesday night, August 5th, 2026, Russian missile and drone strikes targeted Kyiv and its surrounding region, killing 17 people and injuring 44 others, according to Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The attacks damaged business premises, including a brewing company, a warehouse for construction materials, and a mail sorting office unrelated to the war, as well as a train station.
The Russian Defence Ministry claimed the targeted businesses had concealed military ties, stating that one attacked centre was "storing and distributing dual-use goods, including those used in the production of long-and-medium-range uncrewed aerial vehicles, as well as robotic systems and electronic warfare systems."
Mykhailo Hukov, a 40-year-old warehouse worker in Kyiv, reported that an air raid warning including a ballistic missile threat sounded just after midnight, prompting an immediate evacuation. Ivan Braga, a 46-year-old truck driver from Moldova present during the attack, described fleeing from his vehicle after it was struck by shrapnel.
President Zelenskyy highlighted a significant drop in air defense missile supplies to Ukraine during the first half of 2026, down to one-third of the 2025 level, and emphasized the critical need for ballistic interceptors to prevent such casualties. He stated, "It is very important for our partners to understand that delays in supplying them, or a reluctance to hand over anti-ballistic systems, lead directly to such horrific casualties and destruction."
Separately, Russian reports indicated that Vladimir Tkachuk, director of a factory supplying drones to the Russian military, was severely injured in a car explosion near Yekaterinburg. Additionally, an attack on the Balzi Rossi restaurant reportedly killed five and injured 19.
Ukraine's largest private postal operator, Nova Poshta, confirmed that a Russian cluster munition destroyed one of its sorting centres in Kyiv.
These strikes are part of a series of large-scale Russian ballistic missile attacks that have become near-routine during the summer of 2026.
