Abbas Alawieh, co-founder of the Uncommitted National Movement, is projected to win the Democratic primary for Michigan's 2nd Senate District, according to Decision Desk HQ. This district includes Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, and parts of Allen Park and Detroit, areas that were central to the 2024 Democratic protest vote campaign where voters cast “uncommitted” ballots over dissatisfaction with then-President Biden's stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Alawieh's victory is seen as a win for both Michigan and national Democrats, including Michigan Governor. In 2024, activists such as Cori Bush (D-Mo.) and Layla Elabed gained attention for leading the uncommitted vote movement, which secured over 100,000 votes—13 percent of the total—against the incumbent president.

Alawieh served as one of the uncommitted delegates at the Democratic National Convention and is almost certain to win the solidly Democratic state Senate seat in the November general election. His opponent in the primary, Byrnes, previously served on the Dearborn City Council from 2018 to 2023.

This development highlights the continuing influence of the uncommitted movement within Michigan's Democratic politics.
