Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson is on track to win the Democratic nomination to succeed term-limited Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) following the primary held on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. Benson faced one challenger in the Democratic primary and was expected to advance easily.

On the Republican side, three candidates vied for the GOP nomination. Republican Representative John James received former President Donald Trump’s endorsement in his contest against businessman Perry Johnson. Former Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox also appeared on the GOP ballot despite having suspended his campaign and endorsing James.

The primary results set the stage for a competitive general election to replace Governor Whitmer.
