French television giant Canal+ has acquired exclusive broadcasting rights for the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Men’s Club competitions across Sub-Saharan Africa. Starting in mid-2027, Canal+ will broadcast the biggest UEFA matches to subscribers in more than 40 countries in the region until 2031.

This deal includes the Champions League, the most-watched football competition in Africa. In French-speaking African countries, Canal+ Sport will regain full coverage of the Champions League and, for the first time, add the Europa and Conference leagues to its offerings.

Canal+ will also maintain exclusive rights in English- and Portuguese-speaking African countries, with its broadcaster SuperSport continuing to carry the competitions. This expansion follows Canal+’s acquisition of the English-language South Africa-based MultiChoice last year.

Media analysts note that live sports remain the most compelling reason for households to accept price increases for satellite television services.
