Myanmar’s military-backed leader, Min Aung Hlaing, arrived in Bangkok on Thursday, August 6th, 2026, for his first official visit to Thailand since seizing power in a 2021 coup. During his meeting with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Min Aung Hlaing sought to bolster his government’s international legitimacy more than five years after the takeover.

Min Aung Hlaing stressed that his administration is focused on ending the ongoing civil war in Myanmar, which has resulted in over 100,000 deaths according to monitoring group Armed Conflict Location & Event Data (ACLED). He stated, “Myanmar has now reestablished itself on the path to democracy and is moving toward a better future. As the new government, we have now begun working on national stability, peace, and national reconciliation.”

The military government is also pushing for Myanmar’s readmission to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), from which it was barred after failing to implement a peace plan agreed upon with member states in 2021.

Additional developments include Myanmar releasing the first images of detained leader Aung San Suu Kyi since the coup and her receiving her first foreign visitor in five years. Meanwhile, Malaysia has pledged not to return Myanmar refugees if their lives are at risk.
