Senator Rick Scott (R-Fla.) is spearheading a legislative effort to provide President Donald Trump with enhanced tariff powers targeting countries that maintain persistent trade deficits with the United States. The proposed Trade Deficit Elimination Act would establish a congressional framework allowing the president to authorize tariffs where trade imbalances negatively impact America's national security, foreign policy, and economic interests.
This move follows the Supreme Court's rejection of Trump's universal tariff duties and comes shortly after the Trump administration refunded $100 billion in tariff revenue collected during a recent global tariff expansion dubbed "liberation day."
Under the bill, Trump and Trade Representative Greer would be required to consult with Congress, specifically the House Ways and Means and Senate Finance committees, but would not need congressional approval to impose duties on designated countries.
Scott emphasized the importance of preserving America's economic strength, stating, "Previous generations of Americans gave us an economic superpower; it’s our job to preserve what they built and to leave America better than we found it for our children and grandchildren."
Supporters argue that recent trade practices have allowed foreign partners to exploit access to American markets while restricting U.S. products abroad. As one advocate put it, "Trade should be fair, not one-sided, and it’s refreshing to have a president who isn’t afraid to hold our trading partners accountable."
President Trump has previously highlighted his commitment to restoring American prosperity, declaring, "Decline is a choice, and President Trump is taking action to restore American prosperity."
