SEOUL — South Korea has decided to drop its plans to co-fire ammonia with coal at power plants, according to Energy Minister Kim Sungwhan. Speaking to Nikkei Asia on August 6, 2026, Kim explained that using ammonia in this way could extend the operational life of coal-fired power plants, which would undermine the government's efforts to decarbonize the energy sector.
The South Korean government aims to completely phase out coal-fired power generation by 2040. The policy shift away from ammonia co-firing may also impact global production and supply chains related to this emerging energy source.
This move reflects Seoul’s commitment to reducing carbon emissions and transitioning toward cleaner energy alternatives.
