TOKYO — The consumption tax cut approved by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's cabinet has become a new point of tension in U.S.-Japan relations. Some members of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party have expressed worry over increasing opposition from Washington regarding the fiscal policy shift.

This development highlights a growing fault line between Japan and the U.S. on fiscal approaches. Opposition parties in Japan have also leveraged Washington’s concerns to criticize the ruling coalition.

Notably, former U.S. President Donald Trump was photographed speaking aboard the USS George Washington aircraft carrier in October, underscoring ongoing U.S.-Japan ties amid these fiscal disagreements.
